Treating Snake Bites in Our Pet Emergency Room in Los Angeles

anti-venom for pet emergencies.jpgHere at Animal Emergency Centre in Studio City, we see veterinary emergencies of all types and we are proud to serve as your local pet emergency room in Los Angeles. One of the most potentially serious emergencies that we sometimes encounter is snake bites in pets. This is where our emergency vet can provide a convenience in service. We house an anti-venom bank and we are prepared to help your pet through the snake bite and into recovery as quickly as possible.

Our Emergency Vet is Here for Your Pet

We feel that it is our duty as an emergency vet to be as fully prepared for all different types of emergencies as we possibly can. That is why the staff in our pet emergency room in Los Angeles is fully trained in handling snake bites in pets and in administering anti-venom when needed. If your pet needs antivenin to treat the snake bite, we will administer the serum via intravenous drip. Your pet will receive the antivenin serum for about half an hour (longer in some cases) during which the venom is counteracted by the antivenin, which is purely biological and is actually derived from horses. It is effective at treating four unique venoms. Your pet may not need anti-venom, however we feel that it is always important to be prepared.

If your pet has been bitten, there are a few things that you can do to help us determine the extent of the problem. First, do not try to alter the snake bite in any way, but bring your pet in for treatment as quickly as possible. Next, try to remember as much information about the type and appearance of the snake that bit your pet. This can be enormously helpful in determining the course of veterinary treatment.
