Treating Snake Bites in Our Pet Emergency Room in Los Angeles

Here at Animal Emergency Centre in Studio City, we see veterinary emergencies of all types and we are proud to serve as your local pet emergency room in Los Angeles. One of the most potentially serious emergencies that we sometimes encounter is snake bites in pets. This is where our emergency vet can provide a convenience in service. We house an anti-venom bank and we are prepared to help your pet through the snake bite and into recovery as quickly as possible. Our Emergency Vet is Here for Your Pet
We feel that it is our duty as an emergency vet to be as fully prepared for all different types of emergencies as we possibly can. That is why the staff in our pet emergency room in Los Angeles is fully trained in handling snake bites in pets and in administering anti-venom when needed. If your pet needs antivenin to treat the snake bite, we will administer the serum via intravenous drip. Your pet will receive the antivenin serum for about half an hour (longer in some cases) during which the venom is counteracted by the antivenin, which is purely biological and is actually derived from horses. It is effective at treating four unique venoms. Your pet may not need anti-venom, however we feel that it is always important to be prepared.
If your pet has been bitten, there are a few things that you can do to help us determine the extent of the problem. First, do not try to alter the snake bite in any way, but bring your pet in for treatment as quickly as possible. Next, try to remember as much information about the type and appearance of the snake that bit your pet. This can be enormously helpful in determining the course of veterinary treatment.
Rush Your Pet to Our Studio City Vet Clinic During One of These Common Pet Emergencies

Animal Emergency Centre has treated all types of animal emergencies, with trauma being one of the most common at our Studio City vet clinic. Trauma can come from any type of fall or impact, with injuries that include lacerations, broken bones, and soft tissue damage. Trauma can arise from being hit by a car, bicycle, or falling object, as well as from a run-in with another animal. The other animal can be a wild animal, such as a raccoon, as well as another pet. Dog fights, cat fights, and larger pets attacking smaller pets can result in an emergency situation.Trauma and Poisoning Make the List of Common Veterinary Emergencies
Pet poisoning is another common situation that requires our veterinary services, with pets ingesting a toxic substance. Chemicals like fertilizers, antifreeze, and household cleaners can be to blame, as can medications and vitamins meant for human consumption. Several human foods, such as chocolate and grapes, are also toxic to pets.
Pets that ingest, or at least attempt to ingest non-food items have also made their way to our emergency vet. We have treated pets that require emergency surgery to remove items from their stomach as well as pets that were choking on foreign objects. The object can be anything, from rocks to chunks of glass from a broken peanut butter jar. Even if the object ends up in the pet’s stomach with no issues, it can become lodged at the base of the intestine or otherwise impede digestion.
Heatstroke is a common seasonal danger seen at our emergency vet clinic. Leaving pets outside without shade or water or, worse yet, leaving pets in hot cars can lead to this life-threatening situation. Signs of heatstroke include disorientation, extreme panting, and seizures.
As the premiere pet emergency room in Los Angeles, Animal Emergency Centre is open seven days a week for any type of emergency, common or not.

Beware of the Heat
With this recent heat wave we have had in the Los Angeles area we have seen an alarming number of heat exhaustion patients at the emergency center. We want to remind our pet owners that ALL pets are in danger of heat stroke. Young puppies can get excited and overexert themselves and older pets aren't as tolerant of the heat as they were on last summer's hike. Please don't leave your pets in your cars, stay off the trails during extreme heat days and make sure that pets have access to plenty of fresh water during the day.
If your pet is overheated
If you believe that your pet has become overheated it is critical that you get him to a veterinarian IMMEDIATELY. Call your regular vet if they are open or bring him to the Animal Emergency Centre in Studio City if they are not. Treatment must be started right away to minimize any organ damage that might have occurred. If you are able to quickly hose your pet down with COOL not COLD water than do so, but not if it will delay in getting him to the hospital. The faster that treatment is administered the better the chances of survival. Search for "Heat Stroke" in our medical database for further information.
