Know Which Foods Can Be Harmful to Prevent a Trip to the Pet Emergency Room

Posted on 2012-02-23 14:41:42

Emergency vet advises pet owners of toxic foods.jpgThere are a surprising number of foods that are toxic to cats and dogs, and ingestion of one of these items is an emergency situation. The faster you can get your pet to the animal hospital for an evaluation, the faster he can be treated. Our pet emergency room in Los Angeles is designed to handle any emergency you encounter; emergency care is our primary function.

One of the best ways to avoid needing emergency veterinary care is to prevent accidents in the first place; review this list and familiarize yourself with some common foods problematic for pets:

5 Foods That Can Trigger a Visit to the Emergency Vet

Grapes and raisins: These lunchbox staples are great for humans, but can cause kidney problems for your pet. Keep the fruit, stems and seeds out of reach to prevent sickness, vomiting or more serious health problems.

Beverages: Not all toxic items are solid foods. Leave out that cup of coffee or tea and you may tempt your pet to sample it; the caffeine in these beverages is dangerous. Avoid a trip to the emergency vet by disposing of liquids like tea, coffee, alcohol and soda promptly.

Pits and seeds: Be wary of pits and seeds from fruits and vegetables. These items are commonly tossed in the trash, and if your pup likes to raid the garbage, he or she could be in danger. Use a lid on your trashcan to discourage dumpster diving -- and save yourself the worry of a veterinary emergency.

Onions: Onions and foods that have been cooked with onions are toxic for your pet. Be particularly wary of meats that may contain onions or garlic; these may be very tempting for your pet.

Candy: Candy of any type is bad for your pet but some kinds, including chocolate, can be deadly. Never give your pet chocolate, and pay extra attention to what you leave lying about during the candy friendly Halloween and Easter seasons.

Prevention is best, but if your pet has encountered any of the above listed items or consumed something you are not sure about, visit our pet emergency room in Los Angeles to have your pet seen. With an onsite emergency vet, blood bank and animal hospital laboratory, we are prepared to help.

Treating Snake Bites in Our Pet Emergency Room in Los Angeles

Posted on 2012-01-26 08:27:14

anti-venom for pet emergencies.jpgHere at Animal Emergency Centre in Studio City, we see veterinary emergencies of all types and we are proud to serve as your local pet emergency room in Los Angeles. One of the most potentially serious emergencies that we sometimes encounter is snake bites in pets. This is where our emergency vet can provide a convenience in service. We house an anti-venom bank and we are prepared to help your pet through the snake bite and into recovery as quickly as possible.

Our Emergency Vet is Here for Your Pet

We feel that it is our duty as an emergency vet to be as fully prepared for all different types of emergencies as we possibly can. That is why the staff in our pet emergency room in Los Angeles is fully trained in handling snake bites in pets and in administering anti-venom when needed. If your pet needs antivenin to treat the snake bite, we will administer the serum via intravenous drip. Your pet will receive the antivenin serum for about half an hour (longer in some cases) during which the venom is counteracted by the antivenin, which is purely biological and is actually derived from horses. It is effective at treating four unique venoms. Your pet may not need anti-venom, however we feel that it is always important to be prepared.

If your pet has been bitten, there are a few things that you can do to help us determine the extent of the problem. First, do not try to alter the snake bite in any way, but bring your pet in for treatment as quickly as possible. Next, try to remember as much information about the type and appearance of the snake that bit your pet. This can be enormously helpful in determining the course of veterinary treatment.

Rush Your Pet to Our Studio City Vet Clinic During One of These Common Pet Emergencies

Posted on 2011-10-05 11:58:19

Studio City vet clinic aids in pet emergencies.jpgAnimal Emergency Centre has treated all types of animal emergencies, with trauma being one of the most common at our Studio City vet clinic. Trauma can come from any type of fall or impact, with injuries that include lacerations, broken bones, and soft tissue damage. Trauma can arise from being hit by a car, bicycle, or falling object, as well as from a run-in with another animal. The other animal can be a wild animal, such as a raccoon, as well as another pet. Dog fights, cat fights, and larger pets attacking smaller pets can result in an emergency situation.

Trauma and Poisoning Make the List of Common Veterinary Emergencies

Pet poisoning is another common situation that requires our veterinary services, with pets ingesting a toxic substance. Chemicals like fertilizers, antifreeze, and household cleaners can be to blame, as can medications and vitamins meant for human consumption. Several human foods, such as chocolate and grapes, are also toxic to pets.

Pets that ingest, or at least attempt to ingest non-food items have also made their way to our emergency vet. We have treated pets that require emergency surgery to remove items from their stomach as well as pets that were choking on foreign objects. The object can be anything, from rocks to chunks of glass from a broken peanut butter jar. Even if the object ends up in the pet’s stomach with no issues, it can become lodged at the base of the intestine or otherwise impede digestion.

Heatstroke is a common seasonal danger seen at our emergency vet clinic. Leaving pets outside without shade or water or, worse yet, leaving pets in hot cars can lead to this life-threatening situation. Signs of heatstroke include disorientation, extreme panting, and seizures.

As the premiere pet emergency room in Los Angeles, Animal Emergency Centre is open seven days a week for any type of emergency, common or not.
