One of the more common emergencies we treat here in our office, especially during the hot summer months, is that of heat damage to a pet's paws.

Heat Damage to Paws: What You Need to Know

Have you ever made the mistake of walking barefoot on hot asphalt? If so, then you know first-hand what a painful and unpleasant experience this can be! What many pet owners fail to realize, however, is that hot pavement can be just as dangerous for your pet's paws. Yes, cats and dogs have some protective "paw pads," but the skin on these pads isn't thick enough to provide full protection against burns and blisters, especially on a hot day!

Did you know that sidewalk and asphalt temperatures in the summer months can easily reach temperatures of 90 to 100 degrees in the middle of the day? Would you want to walk barefoot in these conditions? Probably not! While you may have good intentions in taking your dog for a walk, exposing your dog's paws to hot pavement can result in serious burns, blisters, and other damage. If left untreated, these could also become infected, creating an even more serious problem.

Preventing Heat Damage to Paws in Studio City

The good news is that there are plenty of ways to protect your pet from paw heat damage and related injuries in Studio City. For starters, if you're going to take your pet for a walk, consider going early in the morning when the sun is first rising or later at night when the sun is setting. If your schedule limits you from walking your pet anytime other than during the middle of the day, make sure your pet walks in the cool grass rather than on the pavement.

Finally, taking the time to moisturize your pet's paw pads on a regular basis will help to further protect them against cracking, peeling, and other injuries while walking. A small amount of petroleum jelly works great for this purpose!

When to See Our Studio City Emergency Veterinarian

If your pet's paws have been burned (blistering, redness, and peeling are common signs), it's important to see our Studio City emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. In the meantime, the best thing you can do is to gently rinse and cleanse the affected area. At Animal Emergency Centre, we can provide the prompt care needed to protect your pet from further complications. We'll take the time to properly clean the paws, apply an antibiotic ointment, and bandage the paws as needed. Our office is open evening and overnight during the week, and 24 hours on weekends. Give us a call at (818) 760-3882 today.
